Wildfire Smoke and Ash in Your Air Ducts: What to Do First
After a nearby fire, it's reasonable to wonder what got into your HVAC system. These are practical first steps for Westside homeowners, in a sensible order.

First steps
- Follow official guidance on air quality and on returning home.
- Take photos of any ash or residue before cleaning. Your insurer may want them.
- Check the HVAC filter and replace it if it's dirty.
- Check vent covers and returns for ash or soot.
- If you have damage, contact your insurer before arranging any major work.
What duct cleaning can and can't do
Duct cleaning can remove settled ash and residue from ducts and vents that can be reached. It can't remove smoke from insulation, furniture or building materials. If the smell remains throughout a home, the source may be outside the ducts, and a restoration specialist may need to assess it.
