Sanitizing is an optional treatment after duct cleaning, and it can help with musty smells in some systems. It isn't needed on every job, so we'll tell you honestly whether it makes sense for your property.
A musty smell can have several causes, including moisture problems that a treatment won't fix. We look at the system first. If there's a moisture source, it needs to be fixed before anything else, or the smell may come back.
The EPA advises caution with chemical treatments in ducts. It says research hasn't shown they work well inside duct systems, and that some people may react to them. It recommends that a provider show you the visible growth and explain why cleaning and moisture control aren't enough. Products are also not suitable for all duct materials.
We will explain the product, where it would be used and any precautions before you agree. If you'd rather skip it, that's fine.
We don't diagnose mold by looking at it. If you see substantial growth, or if anyone in your home has symptoms, consider testing and talk with a qualified professional. Wet or moldy duct insulation generally needs replacing, not cleaning.
