Why to Book a Chimney Sweep Before Your First Fire
Even in mild Southern California winters, fireplaces get used, and many sit idle for most of the year. A quick check before the first fire can catch problems that built up while it wasn't in use.

What can build up
Creosote is a flammable byproduct of burning wood. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, masonry fireplaces should be swept when there's 1/8 inch of sooty buildup, or sooner if there is glazed creosote. Birds and other debris can also block a flue that hasn't been used for a while.
Pre-season checklist
- Look for soot or flaky deposits in the firebox
- Open the damper and check that it moves freely
- Check for a chimney cap and look for damage
- Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
- Book a yearly inspection, which CSIA recommends even for chimneys used only occasionally
